Our film has many physiological themes which can be linked to previous media texts 'Shutter Island' (2010) and 'Fight Club' (1999). These films portray dissociative identity disorder in a more thematic and dramatic way, with both of them being shrouded in mystery which keeps the audience guessing which plot element comes next.
In Fight Club we see the film through the (unnamed) narrator's eyes therefore we see the figment of his mind which is 'Tyler Durden'. This a theme that we would like to take for our own film, as it will lead to a large reveal at the end of the film.
Although we are presenting the illness as a plot device to some respect, we do want to create some sympathy for the character with it. We are constructing a much more positive representation of dissociative identity disorder in our film, although the character does act in a threatening manner, we want the audience to feel genuine sympathy for him.
Mental illness in film is common, so for our film we want to take it from more of a unique angle. We are going to examine not how the main characters actions will affect their own lives, but the lives of those around them.
